Tian De Temple
“I believe the temple can integrate into modern society by doing more charity work beyond just prayer…We have to change our mindset to accept people of other religions for volunteer work.”
- Mr. Raymond Wang, Chairman of Tian De Temple
Mr. Raymond Wang
Tian De Temple (天德圣庙) is truly a symbol of Singapore’s diversity. Widely recognized for its “open-door” philosophy, Tian De Temple actively welcomes devotees from diverse faiths, socioeconomic backgrounds, and traditions. Going beyond its role as a religious institute, Tian De Temple houses Pro Bono SG’s Community Law Center, engages in philanthropic activities, and serves as a communal site for Chinese festivals.
From my interview with Mr. Raymond Wang, chairman of Tian De Temple, I had two major takeaways. First, a temple isn’t always conventional and doctrinaire. Due to its antiquity and status as a culturally significant landmark, I always associated the temple with the older generation. However, I learned that temples are actively hosting intergenerational events, such as durian festivals and prayers to the God of Education for young students. Second, a temple can provide both psychological comfort and spiritual guidance. By hosting regular food distribution drives for the needy, Tian De Temple has become an essential resource for its local community.
To answer the inevitable question of “Now what?”, I’ve reflected on two steps I can take to help preserve Tian De Temple. First, I can visit the temple and make a small donation toward their utility and maintenance fund. Part of the fund will cover electricity and operational costs for the Community Law Center's continuous free legal aid. Second, I can organize a heritage walk to the temple as an officer of my school’s chapter of Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society.
Ultimately, contributing to the preservation of heritage sites can take many forms, both small and large. You can also contribute by donating, taking a simple tour of the temple, or even participating in community festivals and spreading the word. Leverage your skills, connections, and position to help preserve Tian De Temple!
